The old yesteryear systems were a worm gear on the steering shaft that spun the sector gear, so that is why modern power assisted rack and pinion is harder when the power assist fails. Been there with a 2000 F 150, drove that bitch for a couple of years with a failed pump. Your right, not an easy task even rolling.

My recall doesn't show up on the toyota app or website, but when I search my vin, it is affected. I did not receive a letter or email, either. What the hell, Toyota.

    Too many, but not enough....
Maybe it was on the cusp of the date range and they expanded it slightly for added safety.

Not sure, but that is pretty crappy to not actively tell everyone involved about it. My "order date" was July 21, if that makes a difference.

Hoping it doesn't crap out on me when I'm 100 miles from nowhere wheeling in the boonies, like I will be next week.

Going to be interesting to see if any tragic loss of life occurs. Hopefully not, but steering going out at the most inconvenient time could obviously become really bad really fast! Kinda reminds me of Honda hood latches, at least the safety catch usually catches those. Not much you can do when steering goes, guess I will order some EBC yellow stuff brake pads for starters though.

The problem has been identified as a vendor issue. They have 4 machines that cut a groove for a “circlip” that is supposed to hold the seal in place. One of the cutters had broken teeth that resulted in an improper groove so the clip does not hold the seal in place under pressure. There are approximately 22,000 vehicles affected subject to inspection. One in four will need new steering racks. The other 3 out of 4 are good to go....

That's some depressing quality control there. Maybe it's time to drive my Tundra to the nearest Toyota dealer, park one front tire right next to a high curb and turn the wheel lock to lock. If she blows that at least I'm close. All kidding aside, I'm hoping an inspection can be devised to check this grove without removing the rack. If the missing teeth part is true maybe the groove wasn't cut deep enough that it can be easily seen by measuring how much of the circlip is visible outside the groove.

Whoever was putting the snap rings in should have caught it. They should also have a simple go-no go guage to verify the rings seat correctly. Sounds like someone just got lazy or wasn't trained properly. Bad news when it involves steering racks on 7000 lb trucks!

Yep, according to the VIN on Toyota Canada's site mine falls in under the recall campaign build dates, 08/21.

Anyone know if they would cover an OEM rack just purchased and installed?
I just got one this summer and installed it in my 07 while I had my front end apart.

Figured I'd do it while I had the replaced all the other front end stuff.

Only if you happened to buy one that was manufactured in the recall time period and then you would be subject to recall but getting reimbursed for the rack you just bought? I can't see that happening.

It was recently, as in this year, just depends how long the rack was sitting in a warehouse I guess.

If anything I’d just want a replacement if mine failed, not looking for the installation and not really looking to tackle that job anytime soon.

We’ll see how everything shakes out.

Unfortunately I have 2 trucks that could be affected, my 2019 and my 2007.

My 2021 TRD Pro is effected built in Sept.
Sitting in my heated shop...don't want to drive it far from home so it's pretty useless and still making payments.
Toyota dealer could care less imo...not happy with them...
Anytime Toyota you can step up and fix this eh?
At least the 2021 Limited we have was built back in late 2020 and that seems to be OK ...at least so far so good.
Just put a deposit down on a 2022 4Runner though...so the Pro will be going down the road...even if it's on a flat bed...;)

The second rack recall includes 151 vehicles that may have had replacement racks installed that were made during late July through mid October. I cant see Toyota keeping a paper trail like aircraft parts so knowing for sure if the rack you recently purchased may be a bad one might be difficult. I know my 2021 has a 1 in 4 chance of having a time bomb rack.

I would take that TRD Pro and while sitting still give that PS rack a good workout going lock to lock. If'n she blows give Toyota a call. If'n she survives drive it like you would a truck with manual steering.

    Congrats on the retirement btw...
I'm gonna try to have patience and wait on Toyota to call it in and let them do whatever it is they have to do to confirm there is or is not a problem...and of course bitch on the internet...o_O in the meantime.
Also I don't want to have to rely on Toyota picking up the vehicle and then telling me to find ride with someone...like some have had happen.
But I get what your saying...I think...just get it over with now one way or the other...
I think I will just keep the mileage low and wait for the all clear or fixed it from Toyota and then find a buyer with enough cash to spend to make me part with it.
4 Runner was supposed to be loaded on the boat last week...hopefully the Tsunami didn't claim it.
So I got a couple of months to figure it out.

Just an FYI ... (Good read for info)

I am waiting delivery of my new 2021 DC due to the recall.

My Service manager told me Toyota has applied to the NHTSA to remove the "Stop Sale" order to
let the affected 2021's (and new Sequoias) be sold.

I have mixed emotions about this. OF COURSE I want my new truck... But i am concerned with dealing with
a failure. And I feel like this sale would put me at the end of the line when it comes to replacement parts.

Should I stand my ground and make them fix it before I put the 8th mile on the truck? (She has 7 miles on her).

On the other hand, I see the grand handfull of you guys already waiting and I feel like a dick for
fighting for my rack to be done now, before yours.

As of now, we are still waiting on parts. My guess, with 2022 coming to the lots, I feel that, unfortunately,
mama Toyota is gonna go with the quick money first and fix the existing '21's to get them off the lot.
Probably not the right move INMHO.

I am posting this to get in a fight...
... Of course I'm kidding, I am merely informing you guys of the info I have.

*I have a solid 2013 CM with 170k, that gets me to work and back just fine, so I am in no rush. And
it would mean more to me and the community, in my eyes, if they fixed the current owners first.
    Just saying.

Every time I go wheeling I get more confident in mine. Like surely it would have gone by now.
