I selected reset alcohol density learning and test drove as instructed by the scanner prompt. I then checked and alcohol is at 68% not zero. Also, it shows learning is incomplete. I’m hoping I don’t end up having to take it to the dealer for a fuel pump replacement.

Did you add fuel after resetting alcohol density? I went to the pump, reset it, added fuel and then ran through the procedure listed below. Worked for me and has been great since

Question for my fellow flex fuel owners.

Is this issue only occurring for people who live in cold environments? I’ve had my 2019 FF since Sept 2022 bought with 56,149 mi currently have 127,100 as of writing. I have never had this issue and although I live in Northern Mississippi we do occasionally have some cold weather. I have yet to experience a long crank or CEL light I’ve even ran E85 and never had issues. This being said I don’t have a bidirectional scan tool so I have no clue what my Alc % is, so it worth getting a bidirectional since I haven’t experienced any of these said issues? I feel like it’s probably going to happen eventually when I least expect it and at the worst time possible.
EDIT: wanted to add that it’s the factory fuel pump still in the truck never been replaced.

I can confirm that doing it the way you said reset the alcohol to 0%. Thanks!

Honestly, the scanner is on sale for $120 from Amz from regular $178. I would go ahead and get it. It’s only for Toyota/Lexus though. The dealer quoted $1500 to replace the fuel pump. If this is a permanent fix then I saved myself over $1400.

It works for global OBD2 as well, so you can scan whatever you want and get generic/global OBD2 codes. Glad it is working for everyone, I am still pleased with mine.

After you reset the density to zero, is it necessary to throw in a couple gallons of fuel right afterwards? I heard the dealerships did 3 gallons. My portable gas can only holds 2 1/2 gallons. If that’s needed Is that amount suffice?

It needs to be enough to make the needle on the gas gauge move up.

And just to be clear, I was under the impression that there was an actual setting you had to access to set the alcohol to 0%. There is not. Go to the gas station or fill up a gas can so you can follow the procedure after selecting learn fuel density option.

There is still white smoke that comes out when first starting up, not sure what that’s about.

Did you leave the truck on while doing the alcohol reset? I bought that same scanner. If should be here today or tomorrow. Thanks.

That what happen to my friend truck too. It would NOT take the reset. Since his was still under the TSB (2016 model with 98k), we took into the dealer to flash the ECU (updated) then the value stay at Zero. Sorry to hear that it not working. Maybe try to add 3 gallon then do the reset?

yeah I’m at 169k miles. So no warranty there. I’ll get to add my 2.5 gallons of spare fuel. See if that works.

Here’s after adding 2.5 gallons of gas. Now it won’t “complete” the learning process

Why can’t you do the reset sitting parked at the fuel pump then add gas and drive as the FSM calls for?

My tank is already full. I literally got gas yesterday. I guess I might have to try the reset after a tank?

You need to be able to move the gauge. 50 miles of driving ought to be enough to trigger the reset when topped off. Read and understand the process so you add the fuel and start the truck in the correct sequence after reset.
