I decided to double check that I received the new and improved part. Without removing the seat shield, i compared what I could easily see with "Trazerr"'s picture. I was able to see the much wider ribbing towards the front and the additional ribbing at the bottom just forward of center. The part number on invoice is 71806-0C102-C0. So... it's new and improved.

Mine will get replaced with the cost covered by Toyota, although they stated it is not covered under warranty and this is a one time gesture of good faith.

But it's not purely cosmetic ... The shield physically secures multiple electrical switches, which in turn helps to prevent the wires connecting to those switches from rubbing against steel seat structures in that area. What would have been a better design is if the switches were attached to a sub-panel which is attached to the seat frame, and then the shield/cover fits over it making it more or less cosmetic.

Lemon laws are generally based on two types of warranties. An express warranty is a statement made by a manufacturer, distributor, or seller about the quality of a product. An implied warranty is based on common law or statute. It is broader in scope than an express warranty, and it has the purpose of assuring consumers that goods meet a minimum standard of quality and suitability for their intended purpose.

The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, first enacted in 1975, governs consumer product warranties. It applies to any consumer goods used by individuals or families with a retail price of $15 or more. It requires any seller making an express warranty to make a full disclosure, in easy-to-understand language, of the warranty’s terms and conditions. Sellers may not limit consumers’ rights under any implied warranties, may not impose any duties on consumers other than notifying them of defects, and must attempt repair, replacement, or refund if possible. The statute does not replace or supersede any rights a consumer may have under state law. States lemon laws generally mirror Feds. The seat trim part is more than $15.00.

With "usually" being the keyword there ... I've seen posts here and in other forums where owners of (as far back as) the 2016 Tundra have reported the same problem. Seven (7) years to fix a common/obvious problem ?

I had mine replaced almost 4-5 months ago. The new one is cracking now as well. It is definitely related to how I get out of my truck. I kind of slide out until my foot hits the running board. Even with that I still think the quality of the panel is sub-par for the price we pay for these trucks. Never had this problem before with my '13 Taco.

UPDATE: Tonneau cover fix is two metal plates underneath cover bolted to rail. Seat cushion side cover replaced under warranty. Squeak in sunroof not reproducible.

Good to hear the seat shield was replaced under warranty ... I bring my Tundra in on Thursday for the same issue along with the 10K service.

I had the same issue as it seems everyone else is. Took it in to my dealer, the service advisor took a photo of it, was very cool and said "yeah, this is happening a ton, I'll get a replacement ordered and we'll warranty it." A week later went in and got another guy who kinda barked "well, we'll do it this time as a courtesy, but toyota isn't covering it."

I don't get it, spend $70k on a truck and they won't cover a plastic part that is clearly an issue? Why doesn't the warranty cover it?

Kinda BS if you ask me.

Ask to talk to the Service Manager next time. I got mine replaced under warranty with no questions asked and it was just a crack. Yours is much worse.

Ive seen that the power seat models are getting new panels with a new part #, is there an updated part for manual seat models? My passenger side has the beginnings of a crack underway.

After 4 months on backorder. Finally got the call today from dealer saying the seat panel came in. Will be bringing truck in Wednesday for install.

Now let see if they going to do the passenger side.

Just went on here to see if this is common. I’ve had my 23 Tundra for 6 months and this is already like this? I’m assuming my warranty won’t do anything for this?

Bring it back to your dealership. They should replace it free of charge. You can show them that others have experienced the same issue.

I think was confirmed they upgraded the part now so you should be good, someone had a pic of both side by side and the new one had more reinforcements

It is definitely the manufacturers problem. Mark my words, when someone slices their leg open and cuts the wrong area on the back of their leg Toyota will 100% be liable. They know its an issue, there's no denying it. I can only see liability and probably even negligence at this point. It would probably be smart of everyone that has the issue to report it to their dealer as a safety issue in writing...just saying. Good luck with your vehicle and hope everything else with it is satisfying!

While mine has not cracked in my 2021, it seems some screws came loose and the front guide has derailed.

I have at 45,000 cracked my third seat panel. This is my 7th Toyota product and I have never had the issues that I have seen with this truck—yes I have had first year models and at 195 pounds I am not massive.
Calling Toyota was a waste of time. It appears that Toyota has been successfully Americanized.
