Whatever this forum told me to do
    pure genius

    I resemble this.

Let's do some maths on this ponderous point:

I got the wife a Tesla Model S Plaid....so, lets see how it increased my combined MPG

I got the Tesla fuel $'s via the Tesla app...she drives ~1000 miles per month - all city. last month we spent $34 on electrons (Home charging only, did not use a tesla station). I backed into gallons using 93 octane - presuming a 1020hp car is going to use high octane. @T-Rex266

bada-boom....i now get a combined ~23mpg. in a damn Supercharged Tundra....who da thunk it?

so...if you want to REALLY increase your MPG...you now know what to do.

on the downside....the Tesla does not have a Transmission cooler.

That is very cool, but if Tesla model S cost 50K more then your Tundra and you spending 5K more on gasoline every year…. 10 years to just break-even .

    I concur....however:

    I wasn't after a break even.

I was after handing out ass whoopin's at red lights.

    mission accomplished.

EV's are not a great answer to any energy question....but they are fun.

and I wish it was only $50k more than a Tundra.

The energy to run an electrical fan has to come from somewhere and guess where that is.

Well, the new truck only runs the fan when it is needed. Whereas a mechanical fan is always spinning to some degree. It is blowing some air over a cold radiator with the thermostat closed.
To me it is not a question of efficiency but dependability. AND that mechanical fan will move a lot more air than the electric fan when engaged. If in fact my fan uses 30 hp it is moving far more air than that little baby electric motor that is good for maybe 5 hp?

I know some competitors have electric over hydraulic steering (my Duramax has this system) and the light duty trucks have EPS (my Lexus does as well..very responsive) and it would give the Tundra some extra efficiency for sure. Do I like my electric over hydraulic steering in my Duramax? Depends. Empty..no. Loaded down…yes.

I’m with some of the others on here with mechanical vs electric fans. They will work for small loads and DD, but fall short when real loads are put on the vehicle. I’ve seen a number of head gasket issues due to overheating with electric cooling fans.

For reference, the drag coefficient for a gen 2.5 Tundra (2014-2021) is reported as 0.37.

Yeah I never meant for this thread to be a bash on the Tundra. I actually really am enjoying this truck. My only point is, Toyota missed a golden opportunity to improve MPG (and power rating) on these trucks after the 2014 update, during a time when ALL the competition was using electric steering, cooling, etc and thrashing Toyota in all the efficiency and power metrics. Too bad.... A 405 HP Tundra that gets 2 MPG higher rating on the window sticker could have been something special.

For the guys talking about dependability, again I've never seen an electric fan on a modern pickup go bad. That would be a first. But I've replaced several mechanical fan clutches.

And as far as moving air, the Flex-A-Lite electric fan kit I retrofitted to my 2004 Ram 1500 moved so much air that at traffic signals you could feel the heat rolling out from under the truck and up around the driver's window when the window was down. E-fans move a TON of air. Far more than any stock fan on a Tundra.

For a full-sized pickup that is right on par with the latest from Ford and Dodge. Depending on configuration Ford is saying that the 4x4 is around 0.44 and the Lighting is around 0.33.
    Dodge is stating 0.36ish.
The best of production cars are in the 0.28 range.
I can elaborate more on this in the future if there are more questions. But basically that is how well it slips through the air vs. a square block of the same frontal area.

It is decent for a truck. Prius has a .24 and is considered one of the lowest. The problem with a truck is it has a very large frontal area which increases the drag area (product of CoD and FA).

    I looked up some drag coefficients...apparently the 2010-2015 Prius is 0.25, and a 2002-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 is 0.52. :eek2:

I would think the large, blocky front end also means a more drastic decrease in efficiency when the front end is lifted up (leveled) and the wind drag profile is changed.

I drove a 2012 Corolla 36 miles round trip to and from work for 9 years and got a solid 34 miles to the gallon. Gas was 2$ cheaper a gallon then.
I retired last year and bought the Tundra in January.
I just crossed putting a total of 1000 miles on it in the last 4 months since so there's that...
