Correct. Only way to do technical trails is to run 40’s and have a tube structure in place of a bed.

Surprised I missed this but I think this thread is “interesting”. MT is better than LT for gen 2/3 Tundras? I have to say I do not agree.

I think it’s cool we have a dedicated LT thread. I just think it’s odd that the first posts are basically telling you LT is a bad idea for gen 2/3 Tundras.
The title of this thread is little suspect also.

 

Well, as you can note, the thread started in 2015 and was moved to this dedicated section.
By all means, Alex, Bruce, Roy - all the LT guys can add on or start a new thread here, whether experiences with a build, or shops they’ve dealt with, breaks and then fixes needed on the trail...a boatload of topics dedicated to LT.

And to be clear, 2 FT jumps are not BS. They’re what we, in the industry call, baby jumps. Getting real air involves deployment of air bags and bent frames. That is not what we do. Well, most of us. We are just overlanders with microwaves and fridges that like to hit baby jumps and baby whoops.

 

I’m not LT, but does 80 gallons of shock oil help me?

 

Ok so here is my 2 cents on the subject. Yes if you are going to be doing 65 thru barstow main then a tundra may not be the best choice unless money is no option. If you are going out and jumping 100 plus feet a tundra is probably not the best option. There is a reason that you dont see any tundras out in desert races. If you are looking for something with some space and that will give you a good ride and allow you to have fun then that is all that matters.

Jk. But seriously, I am so conflicted right now. @osidepunker 's build thread was this random forum post I read just browsing the net one day before I even owned a Tundra which was likely subconsciously responsible for the inception which led to my buying a Tundra.

Everyone on this forum always says to buy a Platinum and turn it into a "Pro" by throwing money at it. Well because I had the money to throw at it, I wanted the Pro for the novelty and the fact that I could start with a reasonable foundation in the suspension so that I could put money elsewhere in the build with plans to come full circle and add the LT set up at the end once the Bilsteins had served their purpose.

But now reading this old 2015 post from @jberry813 my world is upside down. In my field of work Im the expert and I can throw down knowledge and vomit words on par with how jberry did about LT set ups and confuse the hell out of just about anyone. But I dont know shit when it comes to LT set ups and real off road performance. Thats why Im here. So, thats why Im conflicted now. Jberry sounds like he knows his shit, but so does osidepunker. I didnt think long travel vs medium travel would be the cause of my first existential crisis...

 

I had LT on my first "truck" that was my daily driver. It got old quick, the street manners weren't good. But it was I beam suspension, A arms are a bit better. I used to be a Ford guy. If it's a dedicated off road truck I say go for it if you have the money. I would do it again in a heart beat if i could afford to have 2 Tundras. Too many other hobbies now.

I actually found a glossy photo while cleaning the garage the other day of my Ford airing it out.

 

I'm out there using my truck every month. Last weekend I was at the Parker 425 with several other LT tundras. On Thu/Fri, Beau and I crossed 100 miles of virgin desert. Just camping and wheeling and exploring. Bottom line is I've been successfully using The Truck to explore vast areas of the harshest terrain in North America and its been performing fantastically. I can launch 4' in the air, I can hit 3' whoops at 70mph (but I dont like to as its scary AF), I can rock crawl huge gardens. But most importantly, I can safely travel long distances comfortably and reliably. Here are some pics/vid from l last weekend:

I think jberry was relatively on point at the time of his writing several years ago, and his main takeaway seemed to be "big trucks cost big money to LT properly" - that doesn't mean it's not possible. And, costs have come down significantly as more and more manufacturers have jumped onboard in the past five years.

I can't even count the number of high quality LT Tundras there are now (including @osidepunker who I've been wheeling with for five or six years), so if you have the money, and it suits your style of driving, go for it!

 

It is mostly about the person behind the steering wheel. Expedition vehicles that have been in the most unforgiving terrain on the planet are not LT ones. I want the lowest cenger of gravity and the least vehicle roll possible and with LT that is going in the opposite direction. OK maybe with a light jeep or dune buggy but the shocks are not having to work nearly as hard and they can perform as they are meant to do and dampen the action of the springs. The Brits more correctly refer to shocks as "dampeners".

 

Not sure I see your point— how does LT change or increase center of gravity? The main benefit of LT is increased travel or “droop”, so all tires stay in contact with whatever surface you’re driving over. Which improves traction in challenging environments... always enough ‘shoes’ on the ground to keep moving.

It’s true a diff locker can be very effective but, I’ve driven an LT Tundra in 2wd in reverse up an incline that I could not get a stock all-4-wheels locked 4Runner to back out of without using traction boards to make up for not enough tires on the ground.

 

True...LT is not lifting the vehicle... maybe there is a slight lift from it, but that's not the goal like @Sunnier said... it's all about the droop and increase in travel

 

yeah thats not true. LT is exactly what you need if you want to keep the center of gravity low. spacers lifts or bracket lifts increase the center of gravity, with LT you are keeping everything low and fitting larger tires and everything will clear. plus the ride is awesome

 

Not gonna say this post ruined it for me, but its close!!

I am coming from a 2019 Raptor (tons of issues in the first year of ownership) and am looking to do something similiar to my 2020. Would i just be better off getting something like this for ToyTec: And stick with 34s?
