This was me two weeks ago. The dealer told me my truck needed $15k worth of work. The helpful individuals on this page helped me realize those were insane numbers and did the work myself. Got into this with a max number you want to invest and stick to it if you can. It can all add up quickly.

I did the timing belt on a 2003 a few years ago (family). It was the first change, low mileage. Due to the low miles, I did not replace the fan bracket. It had no play and the bearing was smooth.

Fast forward to today, truck has 140k miles, so roughly halfway through the interval. The fan has a wobble now, so I get to replace the fan bracket soon. Since the idler pulley is mounted to the fan bracket, I'll get a new one of those as well.

Rolled the dice on this one and lost. My old 2004 had the original at 216k miles and was still fine. You just never know. At least replacing them all now gives you new quality parts, and you can decide on the next timing belt change which parts you feel comfortable with letting ride.

    Good luck.

I'm not trying to hijack the thread but, no, it never got stickied. I remember mentioning at some point that it would be useful but, that didn't seem to go anywhere. Seems like it would be a good idea as it's such a predictable and significantly involved maintenance for these rigs.

I paid $2k for mine to be done at the dealer. It was a lot but I can walk to the dealership from my house and the truck was at 157k

I replaced my timing belt (along with all of the associated parts) twice on my 2006 at the recommended intervals. Always used the Aisin kit (second one had more replacement parts than the first, idlers, etc.). Honestly, I had to be careful to keep the new belt separate from the one removed since they both looked identical. Removed belt had no wear marks, cracks or any indication that it had been used at all.

PITA job but I took my time and did everything correctly.
