The potential for this thread is pretty limitless. Best tires, MPGs, oil changes, suspension, yada yada. Masterstroke.

I mean, if someone is actually benefitting from all-terrain tires, then they aren't stupid. My brother got Nitto all-terrains ridge grapplers for his F150 at almost $400/EA. My first question to him was why? He doesn't do any off-roading. I put Nitto crosstek 2 all-seasons on my Tundra for half of what he paid. I don't off-road either, but I haul a bunch of stuff and tow a 24' boat. So, to me it makes more financial sense for all-season tires than all-terrain.

Appearances, it looks like it can do it, even though it's a commuter or garage queens.

That same mentality is why a lot of us 1st Gen guys end up finding 4WD trucks with frozen actuators or other BS issues. From people buying 4WD to keep appearances and/or "just in case I might need it", then they neglect it, and sell it to someone else as their problem.

My new truck came with Michelin LTX Trail tires. Supposedly they're all terrains. They're anything but all terrain and I wouldn't take the anywhere near a trail. The tires on my Corolla are more aggressive and provide better traction.

i use 4wd in the winter as we get a lot of snow/slush/ice in winter. But it would be nice if they had Auto 4wd like a lot of the domestics offer. And ya, I have to do a straight-line run on my 4wd soon... lol

If you pause the video 57 seconds in, you can see that he is running MICHELIN LTX AT/2 TIRES... AT as in All Terrain.
Also, slickrock is a different beast than your average off-road. In sand, mud or mixed terrain you want some good beefy knobs to dig into the ground. On slickrock you almost want a street tire with sipes so that all those tiny little knobs grab onto the tiny imperfections on the rocks for maximum surface contact.
Yes, this dude is running more than just Hells Gate, but again... He is actually on AT tires.

Yeah, I understand that they are called ATs, but they are lightweight, P-rated, all-season, road-mannered tires with the slightest nod possible toward off-roading. These were the factory tires for the 2nd gen trucks with 18” wheels. I think most people here do not consider the P-rated stock tire an actual all terrain despite their marketing.

I mean - OP isn't "wrong" but it's not all encompassing or absolute. 3peak ATs in northern areas I found to be better than a M/S tire on every truck/suv I've owned. yes, a dedicated winter tire would be best, but that comes in to play further below. Too, the AT tread design has improved greatly in the past years between a more highway or OR bias design rather than just sitting right in the middle.

As with all things it just matters how you're going to apply it. A dedicated OR/MT tire will outperform an AT (even aggressive AT) and a dedicated HT will outperform a passive AT. Yes, an HT is less than an AT, but then do you carry two sets of tires? One for true commuting and then an MT set for weekend romping? then there's no cost benefit. Do most people running ATs probably keep the rubber on the pavement - yes, that's statistically proven. But the same can be said about do diesel truck owners actually use the capacity of their trucks and what they were designed to do (i.e. pull heavy loads); again majority are just cruising the highway.

in the end - it's your money and spend it how you want - this is why unpopular opinions are unpopular - they're often on one end of extremes and there are very few true absolutes in life

oh and hello/welcome back pucks

Most true ATs spend their lives on the pavement and only do the type of off roading that a P rated faux all terrain could do.

Hahahah. So basically it wasn't a wheel bearing or exhaust drone, its a bad pinion bearing in my rear end, been driving on it for a couple years and 30k miles later and the bearing is still singing along!

I'm being straight up. They were some dumb AT tire on a 2022 gmc Sierra 3500 dually. When driving straight you could feel every piece of tread

If your truck is 4wd a highway tread tire is good enough. I have plenty of proof of this
