Video Games

Believe it or not, I have this nvidia driver that I like from last year. It's 531.xx something and any time I'm not looking microsoft would be a sneaky bastard and update it from underneath me!! I even limited my c:\ space to less than 10gb and it still happened today!!

I got so pissed, went into safe mode, DDU and installed my last year's driver and expanded my page file and filled everything up with useless junk, leaving like 2gb available.

 

See, too much work for something that is purely for escapism and relaxing to me. I turn it on, numb my brain for a bit, and turn it off. I don't want to have to try and figure out how to make it work right.

 

Well, mine is like 12 years old. I cant abandon her for a ps5. She's an old girlie, but games fine.

 

I work in IT, so don't want to get on a PC for fun. Just got a PS5, and my wife asks me to play, so she can watch it like a movie!

 

This. Granted, it's not like it used to be....but I spend all day managing a team of contractors who provide desktop/server/network services. The LAST thing I want to do when I get home is....hop on another computer, even to play games.

 

I don't think anyone has mentioned Baldur's Gate 3 just yet. It's a damn masterpiece.
Story, voice acting, gameplay, level of detail, exploration, it's all there in spades and at a level of quality missing from FAR larger studios.... oh and... lots of (optional) sex for some reason.

I've played many of the biggest rpg's in it's class of the last decade, namely Divinity 1 & 2, Pillars of Eternity 1 & 2 and Tyranny all of which are very solid, very good games and BG3 manages to come out on top. So if anyone here likes Turn Based Strategic Combat RPG's, this is the one to play.

Also say good bye to at least 40 hrs of your life

Yeah if you have no need or desire to be on a PC, console makes more sense. I have both, but these days I stick with mostly PC (prefer mouse & kb) and only play on Playstation for exclusives. Pretty much everything else available for XBox that I'm interested in playing is also available on PC so I haven't bought an XB in a while.

I just put Diablo 4 down (PC) and finally started Horizon II: Burning Shores on PS5.

I'm in the tech field as well, but even after spending the day looking at code, I still would rather get on a PC or laptop. Even things most people do on mobile, I still prefer to do on my rig or laptop. I've just been an avid PC user since the 90s and been building/upgrading since. Still my preferred platform.

I'll get to BG3 eventually. As for turn-based strategy in general, I had to give them up. Those are my nemesis, I can't put them down. I used to have weekend-long lan parties with friends and play nothing but C&C/War Craft. I've been tempted to pick up the C&C remasters and lately Rimworld, but I thought better of it. I can't survive on 4-hours of sleep anymore... on a week day.

 

Ooooh... I just realized that not only is Starfield out in a couple of days (early access premium version), but it's also a 3-day weekend.

 

So much for more than 4 hours of sleep.

 

Nah, not really. Pretty much every other genre that isn't turn-based strategy I can put down. I've actually fallen asleep playing RPGs at my desk lol. Just something about turn-based strategy games get my blood pumping.

 

I like a good turn based RPG, but the RTS games you mentioned like Warcraft and C&C just don't do it for me. Probably because of my preference for a controller and those only work well on PC.

 

I definitely couldn't play those without a mouse/kb. I tried Diablo III on a console and even that I couldn't do.

 

Ah, and I prefer Diablo on a console. I just wish the AI they use for context aiming was slightly less retarded. Nothing popping Rain of Arrows and having it spin you 180° because there is one demon behind you that is a little closer than the 40 in front of you.

 

Tried Stellaris? You can catch it humble every so often of not. Really good game, with years of content behind it.

Not true turn based, think more Civilization speed style. play pause, speed up / down at will.

 

That's one reason why I have a preference for mouse/kb. I am somehow worse on a controller with anything related to aiming, no matter how much it's supposed to help. With my luck, I'd somehow manage to get the arrows to hit nothing when using a controller.

 

I'm familiar with it, but I never grabbed that one. I have no excuse/reason as to why. I just added it to my Steam wish list, thanks!

And I need to clarify as I got my Ps and Qs mixed up. I just realized I said turn-based strategy, but I was really referring to RTS games that I can't put down. My bad...

 

I think we followed when you gave the titles. Do you not like turn based then?

I do, but I haven't played anything in the genre of late. I did pick up Divinity: Original Sin and XCOM 2 on a Steam sale not too long ago, just haven't gotten around to them yet.

 

Yeah, I'm pretty slow to get to games. Been burned by preorders, so I generally don't do it unless I've got a buddy that is ordering and we are going to play. I also don't follow any game news, so I'm clueless about what is out and what's up and coming too. Don't know Divinity, but I think I've seen marketing images for XCOM?

 

The XCOM series is pretty old, I think 2 was 17ish...

 

I'm with you on that. I almost never read anything apart from what I see in forums, or find on sale on Steam. I'm a huge Diablo fan and heard some time back about D4 being in development, but it wasn't until maybe this past spring when my son asked me if I was going to pick it up that I was aware of the impending release.

Divinity and XCOM are pretty old games, originals released in the 90s/early 2000s. I just hadn't gotten around to playing the latest games in the series.

Yeah, I just don't game like I used to. I pick a game or two and run with those. I generally feel the overall quality of games has gone downhill since the ability to update games became a thing. Kinda like this. There are still some gems that happen once in a while, but it used to be that everything at least worked when you bought it. Now? 50/50 shot if you can even play for the first week.

Still, to this day, one of my all time fav, and still played games is VGA planets... 1993.

you had days per turn, took 2mins to 2 hours per turn, depending on how far and invested you are, play by email. the best description ever written for it. 11 player space chess. you bought the next floppy disk of content.

It was computer comms before the internet.

Bulletin board systems.

In a BBS you had various doors (games or apps the server ran) that you could use and play interactively with others...

BBS planets, required me log into the BBS every X days, and upload to them my turn file. then download my new turn file when it was processed and ready.

Later that moved to just email.

Now its online, with a poor interface designed to stuff it all into a phone.

 

Ah. I see. I never did the PC stuff much. A few flight sims, some RTS, Sim City, etc. Once the Dreamcast and Playstation happened, I moved solidly to console. I don't even have a PC at the house now. I use my phone for the internet, and the PS5 is for my games and the occasional netflix.
