    To OhWhendTRD.....So you use just the OE of Amsoil and at a much heavier weight than the owners manual states. How many miles have you got on that 21 model and did you notice any fuel mileage decrease with heavier oil? Pro's Cons'

    Anyone using a heavier oil than 0W20 notice fuel mileage decrease? What benefits did you get and what negatives did you get along with how many miles you have on your truck and how long you ran that heavier weight?

    I run 5W30 as specified for heavier use such as towing. Mileage seems pretty much the same. 63k miles. Engine is much quieter.

    I wouldn't consider it drastically heavier. Did 0w-20 at 5k and 10k, at 15k I switched to 5w-30 to see how the engine operated with OE Amsoil. I first tried Pennzoil 5w-30 on our Malibu (requires 0w-20 too) ran just fine - no issues or changes to mpg. On the Tundra, first 3 changes the oil resembled water and wanted to consider something thicker. Good portion of this forum uses 5w-30 or other variation from 0w-20, some are very drastic when compared. I'm at 16900 miles so far (1900 miles w/ 5w-30), no issues with a ton of smiles per gallon. Haven't paid close attention to the mpg, knew what I was getting when I bought it, just fill 'er up and enjoy what it was made for.

    Few good hours of toilet reading material. Caution, leg failure when standing.

    Switching to 5w30.

    I just found this thread. I didn't realize you guys were using such low viscosity oils. I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic for the last couple hundred miles and Wix filters. No problems cold starting down to zero. I think the 0-w30 is a good idea on a new engine for 40K miles or so, especially in the North. At 235K miles my oil still looks pretty clean at 10K miles when I change it, but it's almost all highway and I have a Frantz aux filter.

    This is the 1st Gen forum (2000-2006). Do you also have a 1st Gen truck? If not, you probably shouldn't listen to what we're saying in this thread. :rofl:

    @Alltimehigh

    Just to avoid someone screwing up their truck later by putting the wrong oil weight in it, can you go back to your very 1st reply in this thread, and look above the top right corner of that 1st post, click the THREAD TOOLS button, and EDIT SUBJECT to say something about this being a 1st Gen / 2000-2006 thread in the title?

    I've been running 0w-20 in my 04 for 5 years and 50k on 10k oil changes. Just rolled over 214k.

    Getting ready for the first oil change in the new-to-me 5VZ-FE. Will be installing a Fumoto drain, Wix/NAPA Gold filter and whatever 5W-30 is in those jugs that I have leftover from my '95 K1500 (I put 230K miles on that over the years, so it'll be fine). Planning on 5K changes. The previous owner had oil changes done by Monroe or a local shop (gave me a folder with receipts for every service done to it).
