Look for the rubber hose coming out of the valve cover right around cylinder 4 (2nd cyl from front, passenger side)

I’m on a plane or I’d dig up a pic.

OK, I'm starting this with a pure shock value shot.... see what I did there?
Zero rebound, pushed in with about 1lb of force
    20241019_125728.jpg

Here was my method right out of the gate, per MI rust belt. One disc per side, didn't need to go all the way, I just got through about 2/3 of the nut.
They actually looked better than I was expecting. Did not have to remove wheels as she sits awful high with the crazy HD bastard packs.
Access: Passengers from the outside, Drivers from underneath.
    20241019_111908.jpg

    20241019_125813.jpg

I took advantage of the disintegrated dust shields and clamped right on the cylinder shaft. Took a bit of slipping/scuffing until it grabbed on tight.
Ooooh and my favorite 16" stainless  pipe cheater too. (It's my MI fetish)
    20241019_113200.jpg

Not sure if the towers are "swollen" from rust, but it was a tight fit to get enough threads to start the top nut on.
In fact I sacrificed about 1/8 of an inch with the flap disc on the bushing just to get the nut started on the drivers side.
I used needle nose visegrips to make holding it easy. Not sure about the tightening. I went until it basically stopped.
But I didn't see the smoosh I expected on the bushings :notsure:, may need to revisit them. Nope, not gonna do that...
    20241019_121503.jpg

Everything bathed in FluidFilm, bonus coating on the Diff/axle, new BellCranks, and that barnacle LSPV.
Truck sits so high, I (a 6'3" dude) can nearly sit straight up under there w/o the spare tire, that was nice.
About 2hrs worth, pretty pleased with that. I was filthy though... some A-hole has everything coated in motor oil under there :rofl:
I do Love the smell of that Lanolin o_O

    Holy smokes. That's some rust.

I genuinely wish I knew how bad my frame was before it got replaced. (before the truck was mine) Your axle housing looks way better than mine does. Like, way better. The underside of your bed looks better than mine too... I have a feeling that my frame was bad. Real bad.

HAhaha yeah! Sad thing is, I bet when I drive it I won't feel ANY difference. In fact after I bought them I had a fleeting thought, with the trucks ass end so high, if they would limit out on droop :eek2:
We will see, I will report the results... and thx for the nomination :rolleyes:

My bed has holes in it. I did some remediation.. and quick put the liner back in :lalala:
I guess I could have waited a couple more years and just accessed those shocks from the top, through the bed:rofl:

Oh, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the difference it makes. All those jolts going over even the smallest of bumps/potholes goes away. I didn’t believe it myself until I changed my original rear shocks over a year ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if my bed does too. I've never taken the plastic liner out- don't really want to know what's under there. I think having a bedcover it's entire life has helped it, but that doesn't stop the salt underneath.

Thanks for that! Is there anything else there besides the hose that may need to be replaced? Just has one pcv valve right?

    Correct on one PCV valve.

Is there anything else to replace? Dunno, inspect the lines that go into the back of the square bulge on the intake tube, look at both ends, squeeze the ends, do you see any cracks? If yes, you may need to replace some add'l hoses.

Here in the near future, I'm probably going to take a tally on all the ID/OD for the vacuum hoses in my engine bay and replace them all, or at least trim the leading 1/8" off all of them and reinstall. Running up on 20 years of use here soon, it's probably time to overhaul.

I don’t know how you guys put up with all that rust. I had unpainted tubes under my truck for almost two years and they barely had any surface rust on them.

I grew up in the northeast and still have a lot of nostalgia for green, water etc. I know people can get used to about anything, but when I think of moving back east, or even midwest, the first things that come to mind are...rust, ticks.

I like old vehicles, but too many have rusted away back east, and it's a constant problem even with new vehicles. And the ticks. I never once had a tick burrowed in me, growing up. Then I went home for a winter after college and took my Mom's dog for walks most days. Always had to brush dozens of ticks off him after hikes. That was never a thing growing up. I sometimes ask myself if I'd rather have grizzly bears or ticks, comparing Montana to somewhere in the northeast. Kinda think I prefer grizzly bears...And very little rust.

I've met/talked to a surprising amount of people recently that obviously think less of me once I mention the Tundra. Real responses I've gotten: "Why would you drive a stupid jap truck??" "I'd rather have a ranger!" "you tow with that pile?"

Anyone else experienced this? Might just be the people I've met recently. But I've never experienced this much Tundra hate before.

Outside of this community, there's no real discussion about what I drive. Maybe it's cause I hang out with old folks and we look at transportation for what it is...
I wouldn't worry too much about what folks have to say

Yeah, I'd bet it's because I talk to a much younger crown than a lot of people on here. Dumb college students, like me.

Not at all worried about what they think. FGT will forever be the pinnacle. Just curious how much I've noticed it recently.

Never. If anything, I get compliments. Most people around here understand that older Toyota trucks are extremely well made. And they are popular here.

I started a new job this week and have to park in a lot a few blocks away, one guy gave me a ride one day to the lot and dropped me off at the front of the lot but had to circle around to get out, and he sees me walk up to my truck and stops and says “now that’s a man’s truck!”

A good friend of mine from Joliet would tell me this years ago. Definitely a hatred towards non-domestic vehicles. Tell them your truck was made in Indiana and that more parts are made in the USA than his/her vehicle.

Here in New England you get a good mix of both and most cars are Camrys, Accords, Civics and Corollas & Lexus models. Everything else is mostly a crossover or pickup.

I remember growing up in the suburbs of Detroit in the 80s and 90s, UAW country. Japanese cars/trucks were highly frowned upon. There was a UAW hall across the street from my high school. They had 8 parking spots reserved for high school students. Students could park there for free as long as it was "an American car". It didn't matter if your Toyota was manufactured in, say, Kentucky. You couldn't park it there. But your Ford car that was assembled in Mexico? Come on in!

Lots of domestic pickup love out here, but also, from anyone whose opinion matters, plenty of respect for Toyota. There are a few ranchers who drive Tundras, but mostly they drive domestics. I think many somewhat grudgingly acknowledge that Toyota has domestics beat in reliability and longevity, but they want to support American regardless. Toyota may be better, but it's not made here. That's the vibe I get.

And there are some who have a domestic for their work vehicle, hauling horse trailers etc, but might have an old Tacoma for playing in the mountains.

In other news, I did my first transmission pan drain/refill today. Fit exactly one of these, which was convenient.

    Screenshot 2024-10-20 142704.png

First time dealing with ATF so I don't know exactly how it should look. I'd say mine wasn't toast, but I'm glad I did it. Was red, but getting dark. I'll drive another couple hundred miles and do it again. How many times do most people do this per "cycle"? Is two over a few hundred miles enough, or should I do more?
