What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

5100 w/ dobinsons hd springs set at bottom circ ring. Freedom off road uca's

 

Couldn't you just buy new coil boots, or are the 2UZ-FE coils mucho different than the 5VZ-FE? I know I could have just gotten new boots, but after 18 years decided the $150 for new coils with boots were worth it.

 

If the spring rate is high enough, you might not need your sway bar. I removed mine beginning of the year and didn’t notice a difference in body roll at all. Just a thought and could save you some cash.

 

Interesting, I have a 2005 ac 4x4. I will be driving 5k miles to and from Mexico (where I live in the winter) so not all offroad use. I'm getting the dobinsons hd springs due to the fact I'll have a steel front bumper and winch. If I could delete the sway bar with no adverse affects on the road I'm game but would have to get some good feed back to take her off. I'm a sheep when it comes to this stuff lol

Loaded up the new fridge today which happens to fit perfectly. I'll eventually build a little platform for the slide. We went back to that old tunnel. I wanted to see how those Baja lights did. They are amazing. I just need to adjust them.



There was even more water than last year.




Halfway through the tunnel we came up on a Jeep going the opposite way. That was interesting. Thankfully we were able to hug the walls and squeeze past each other. I'll try to post that video later.

Here is a 5 minute video if anyone wants to see what East TN looks like in the summer. At the end of this video you can see where some rednecks flipped and burned an SUV. I couldn't even tell what it was but it really pissed me off. They have ruined this area with tons of trash and broken glass.

You could always remove the links temporarily and try it out. If the sway bothers you it's easy to put them back. I think Erik put his back.

I took my swaybar completely off when I had 600lb springs and it leaned through turns for sure but never felt out of control. I run 650lb springs and aftermarket leaf springs now, I can force a lean if I pitch it but in normal driving it feels normal I guess, 8 years without a swaybar it's hard for me to say.

Yes, I didn't enjoy having my sway bar off. Chris has stiffer springs up front than me so that might have been the difference.

And to answer your earlier question @Surf_spear_Mex I think you could run those Suspension Maxx links at stock height. Worst case you have to take them off until you lift the front.

AC went out again.
And the official diagnosis is, I need a new compressor.

It was cool to have it work for a day before another clog. Shop says compressor's "binding" and struggling. Since I'm already $200 in the hole for their diagnostics, their $650 estimate for new compressor/labor isn't doable.

I told them my plan at this point is to replace everything myself! Luckily, they'll kindly cover the refrigerant evacuation before I swap, as well as the recharge after.

Has anyone replaced their compressor, and where'd you get yours?

@Professional Hand Model will recommend OEM, but $775 isn't in the budget.

What other AC parts should I replace while I'm in there?

Someone mentioned a few components before, but I can't find the post. So far I have:

Denso 478-0500 Receiver Drier

Denso receiver drier ("filter drier").

•

$32 Denso 475-0505 Expansion Valve

Denso expansion valve. (Do I need two?)

•Gaskets? Not sure which.

•Condenser?

•New high/low pressure switches not necessary (since the light is blinking, they're doing their jobs).

Will definitely clean the evap core while it's out, too.

Y'all, especially @shifty` , please let me know if I'm missing anything, and/or how hard this is. Although the compressor fits in/out through the wheel well, this sounds like a terrible job.

Seeing the pic from @Bulldog_tundra made me remember when I first got my truck. I was toying around with the idea of finding a white OEM grille chrome insert and using it with my non-chromed bumper like this, but I wasn't quite sure what it would look like until I finally wasted the 5 minutes to cobble something together.

I really like it. Now to find a white chromed grille insert...

 

What Leaf Springs You Running? Like’em?

Started doing the upper ball joint on the passenger side. It was a pain to get out. Started to press the new one in and it started pressing in crooked so I decided to call it a day and continue working on it in the morning. I also bought new Bilstein 5100s for it so those will be installed soon with Eibach Coils. I’m looking forward to taking her out on the dirt and off road with her and see how she feels with all the new parts. Also gonna do a total chaos front diff drop.

Looks like the coils are the same. I was trying to avoid the inevitable and do some preventative work. I'm moving soon and losing my job as of today, so I'm just scared to spend more than a dollar at a time. I think I'm gonna try out those msd coils when I either need them or can justify the money.

Filled up with petrol at just below ½ tank mark. I mean like a blond "hair" just below. 194.9 miles to half a tank. Glad things are returning to normal.

Checked all the dipsticks while at the servo.
All things in spec except the power steering fluid. Was reading halfway up the "H" on the hot marking. Fluid looks kinda dingy too. May find a baster such as PHM, and change out slowly. Would like to do a full drain/fill but haven't worked out in my brain a good way even with suggestions.

Denso is OEM. You can go to their site and plug in your info to cross check all your necessary items, then shop out their part numbers. Some parts the Stealer might have a better price. Others not so. Shipping is a deal breaker on some heavy items so Big Gurrl usually wins there. Takes time, but you’ll figure out the best route.

I'm free-wheeling at 55-75 most times on improved surfaces 98% of the time. I'm guessing you're doing more gravel, dirt roads than me.

 

It’s interesting you say that. It’s pretty rare I see dirt or gravel in my tundra unless I’m hunting or on a job site.

While Denso recommends replacing the drier too, still unclear on if the evaporator core and condenser should get switched as well. They have some detailed instructions on there, so I'll use those! I usually cross-check prices across Amazon, Toyota, and eBay. The Stealer is typically priciest, like in this case. What is "Big Gurrl?" And I hope you didn't mind the teasing.

 

The short distance is hurting your mileage?

I drive 100 miles a day. Since last Sunday, the 19th. I have driven around 650-660 miles.

 

Same here, since I moved to a small town my mileage sucks. I try to only drive my truck on longer trips instead.

 

Yeah, I drive like 5-6 miles a day on a normal day. There are days that there is more if I need to cover a job site, but it’s mainly short trips.

Try using a local stealer that participates in the new online parts Programme. I have two stealers and one participates and the other doesn’t. Big difference in $. Local pick up makes pay online cheaper by eliminating shipping cost, as well.

I’d replace all the parts if you are going this far. Eliminates another snafu.
