I have an early production Rtic 45

I love it, but found these coolers can be finicky with ice retention. For best results, plan ahead and pre chill the cooler with a couple of ice packs...I also prefer using large blocks or the like once I'm packing the cooler...cube ice just doesn't retain like block ice

I also don't drain the water until I'm either done using the cooler or adding more ice...this will help maintain lower temp inside

If you're comfortable spending the money, then buy any of the major brands with the features you like such as latches, or wheels, or color or whatever

Walmart recently tried to jump on the rotomolded train with hard side Ozark Trail coolers and I know a bunch of folks on TW jumped on them and most had good results but a few had major issues such as the lid bowing or latches breaking

I like my Yeti. There are a lot of good coolers out there now. All are worth the hype if properly prepped. Yeti was the first decent one but plenty of competition now.

Yeti is all I've ever ran on my boat.
I've had the same 65 for 6 years and have never replaced one part.
And this is in the Florida heat and being opened all the time. I fill it with ice and I'm good for 2-3 days.
Also keep a 45 in my truck and just story there.

I have a Yeti 75 and a Yeti Roadie 20. The Yeti 75 is nice and we have 3 of them to use in the backcountry for my fire crew but for me personally, it is too big to lug in and out of my truck for a weekend trip for 2. Plus its so big it's hard to open with the camper shell on. I use it in my canoe on the river and it's great. The Yeti Roadie mostly stays in my truck and I rotate the Yeti Ice blocks in and out of it. I love it. However, I heard a lot of good stuff about Orca Coolers from a friend who works on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon so I nerded out on videos like this when I was looking to buy a mid-sized cooler.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbFSwQYn-mY

I almost bought a Yeti 45 but the inside looked a little small and when I read more about it I learned that it is not a true 45 quart cooler, more like a 37. It was $350.

The Orca 40 cooler seemed to perform just as well in the tests that I saw and it is a true 40 quart cooler. It also has a nice mess net on the back for storage. Plus it sold for $250. I emailed Orca direct and asked them if they gave a discount for fire fighters. They gave me a code for an additional 25% off.

So, in my opinion at $100 cheaper the Orca was the way to go for me. I love my Yeti Coolers but there is a lot of competition coming in the high end cooler market so I thought I'd give Orca a try. I haven't been disappointed.

Do any of the larger high end coolers come with compartments? A divider...one side is for my kids drinks and the order side for food or beer?

The Yeti has some as accessories. Mine came with a wire basket. The Tundra 65, and I bought a divider that runs front to back split vs the side to side they also offer.

I picked up an RTIC 45 a few months ago. couldn't figure paying double the price for a YETI label. RTIC works great as long as the cooler stays closed! it definitely is not a cooler for beer. i have used mine for road trips to keep the perishable foods cold and keeps ice all week as long as we don't open the lid every 20 mins.

How much room does the ice take up on these things? And are those ice packs better? What do they cost?

For my roadie, I just use the standard blue ice packs that they sell at any Walmart. I'm cheap and they work great. Heck, I even have just used soda bottles that I've filled up 3/4 of the way with water and stuck in the freezer.

Ice packs or block ice is most certainly better for retention than cube or crushed ice

I picked up an rtic cooler a few months ago. It's been great and was dirt cheap when they were dumping stock because of the yeti lawsuit. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat if needed

Google the Yeti Rtic lawsuit, I was under the impression that you can't get a Rtic now until they come out with their new design. As far as Yeti being made in the Philippines all the Roadies are but the Tundras are hit or miss USA or Philippines, you have to flip them over and look at the bar code sticker to see where it's made. I picked up my Tundra 65 at a swimming pool dealer before every big box store started selling them and mine is US made. If you order direct from Yeti you can request a US made model except for the Roadie. My Engel 35 should be here Monday and I'm excited to try it out.

I had a Yeti 65 and was not 100% happy with it. Purchased two Cabela's Polar Cap and I am 100% happy with those. Held ice for a week in 95 degree temps on a camping trip last summer.
Although I found a Yeti 30 on CL the guy sold to me for 200 bux still in box, retails for 350 so I took a chance.

Field & Stream did a test on all the top brands and the Cabela's came out on top.
Plus it is a Cabela"s brand and guaranteed for life.

Our gang has Yeti, Rtic, and Engel.
    Not much difference amongst them.
I ended up with the Engel deep blue 80 and 22?.
I saw a shoot out where Engel kept ice longer due to thicker insulation in the bottom over Yeti. And I like the finish on the Engels better.

    Flux capacitor!
I know buccess gas stations in Texas had this RTIC 20 tan for sale for $72! They had pallets of them for sale blowing out all the old stock from the yeti law suit. I also got the RTIC 30 soft pack for $100! All the RTIC cups were only 7$! Needless to say I bought several for friends and family. Lol

    RTIC I got for $72IMG_6889.jpg

Great timing for this thread. I moved some things from my storage unit yesterday afternoon. Forgot to load up my Yeti. Left it sitting outside my unit by mistake. Went back this morning........It was gone. $350 big ones. shit... No video cameras on my unit. Guess it's time to consider what options are out there besides Yeti. I'm inclined to go with what truly functions the best. F##K.

By the way...RTIC was a definite ripoff of Yeti design.Even the tumbler.
